I've had a collection of wooden coins cut from a branch of the apple trees of my old property that I've meant to turn into ogham for years. I still haven't found the time or motivation to actually do so, but, as they say... when you can't do it yourself, storebought is fine. I ran across a set burned into coins rather than staves (which don't appeal to me much) and snapped them up immediately.
They arrived today, so I laid them out on the floor and arranged them in kind. For all that I've worked with ogham before, what I've used has been cards with big pretty pictures that dominate my mind. Having the simple letters in front of me abstracted everything a bunch, making them both more indecipherable and approachable - kind of like bones. Coins make it possible to not only get upright and inverted results, but deosil and widdershins. One of the coins is blank and I'm not sure it was meant to be in there. I've decided it represents serendipity or chance and I appreciate its inclusion, whether intentional or not.
The overall feeling I get from these is the same warmth and kindness I valued in ogham so far, but with an added depth I was missing in my cards. The only thing that feels like it would make it perfect is burning the blank sides as well so whatever I throw is whatever I get, without having to turn anything over. Maybe someday I'll fix that. :)
Having said hello, I blessed the ogham, introduced my energy to them, and welcomed them as family by picking them up in my hands. They fit perfectly in my cupped palms, but as I gathered them up one little ogham jumped out: beith, new beginnings. Sassy as one could want.
I love them.
